I sat through the entire Cremaster cycle yesterday. I am told that the entire project is filled with anatomical allusions to the position of the reproductive organs during the embryonic process of sexual differentiation: Cremaster 1 represents the most "ascended" or undifferentiated state, Cremaster 5 the most "descended" or differentiated. Matthew Barney is truly amazing as he not only acted in all 5 films but directed them as well.
I remember reading an interview with Barney where he spoke about being influenced by horror films.
